Clinical
HAIR RESEARCH
The hair clinic at Vancouver General Hospital is one of the
largest hair clinics in the world. Run by Dr Jerry Shapiro,
it is regarded as a key centre of excellence in
hair disease teaching and research. Dermatologists from around
the world come to study hair under Dr. Shapiro's instruction.
Clinical research and furthering our understanding of hair
loss is a primary objective in the hair clinic. More recently
clinical research
has
focused
on
the biologic mechanisms active in pattern
hair
loss,
several types of scarring alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen
effluvium. As well as studying the mechanisms of hair loss
disorder development, the clinic conducts trials of new or
improved experimental treatments for hair loss disorders.
Clinical HAIR RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS
Although the hair clinic appreciates offers from the general
public as potential volunteers for clinical research and treatment
trial studies, we regret that we cannot consider those who
are not referred to the hair clinic by their doctors. Most
studies
require regular attendance at the hair clinic for treatment
and monitoring.
As such, the clinic only recruits individuals to clinical trials
who are locally resident and who attend the hair clinic as
referred patients.
